GALESBURG — Cole Hopping (Vermont, Ill./VIT) finished runner-up individually and the Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team tied for second at the Knox Purple and Gold Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Soangetaha to cap a busy weekend for the Chargers.
Hopping took a one-stroke lead in the second round after shooting an even-par 72 in Saturday’s opening round. He added a 74 on Sunday to finish 2 over for the tournament and one shot back of Knox’s Patrick Mattar, who fired a 2-under 70 on Sunday.
Sandburg’s Cooper Theleritis (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) tied for sixth with a two-day total of 152. Chargers alumnus Trace White, now playing at Iowa Wesleyan, was 10th with a 154 total.
The Chargers tied Illinois College for second in the team standings after shooting 308 on Saturday and 307 in the second round. Knox won the tournament by shooting 298 in each round.

PHILLIPS T8 AT REGION IV PREVIEW
The Chargers began the weekend by tying for fourth in the Region IV Preview on Friday at PrairieView in Byron.
Sandburg totaled a 322 and was led by Clayton Phillips (New London, Iowa/New London), who tied for eighth with a 5-over 77.
The Chargers finished in a three-way tie for fourth with DuPage and Madison. Bryant & Stratton won with a 315, and Black Hawk was second at 316.
